Reading a veterinary profile: sources, hours, and unknowns
Compare the questions a profile can answer, not the polish of two clinic cards.

A directory comparison is useful when it separates branch facts, missing information and direct answers. It becomes misleading when a fuller profile is treated as proof of better veterinary care. Use PAVI's source and contact information to prepare a consistent conversation with two relevant providers, not to manufacture a quality score.
Before you begin
- For an urgent concern, contact a provider rather than finishing a comparison.
- Choose two relevant branches, not just two familiar network names.
01Identify the level of the listing
Read whether the entry names a specific branch or represents a wider network. A network's official site can help you choose a branch, but it does not identify where your animal would actually be seen.
Write branch name and address separately in your comparison. If either is unresolved, leave it visibly unknown; copying the network name twice does not make the locations comparable.
02Separate hours from receiving capacity
Published opening hours describe a schedule, not a live confirmation that the branch can receive your animal or provide the needed service now.
Ask both places the same practical question: can this branch handle this concern at the intended time, and if not, where should I contact? Do not interpret an emergency category as real-time intake.
03Read the source and the gaps
Open the linked official source and note when the directory information was checked. Identify which fields are present and which need a direct answer.
A missing field is a data gap, not evidence that the clinic lacks the service. Equally, a listed service is not a clinical quality certification or a promise that every branch in a network offers it.
04Use matching follow-up questions
Describe the animal and purpose consistently to both providers. Ask about the relevant service, communication language, appointment arrangement, estimates and how records or onward referral questions are handled.
Keep the actual response date and who answered. Do not compare one provider's current written reply with another's old promotional text as though they were equivalent evidence.
05Decide on fit while retaining unknowns
Review the household's real needs, such as an appropriate service and a usable contact route, alongside the confirmed answers. Ask again where an important gap affects the decision.
Your sheet may end with one suitable next conversation rather than a winner. PAVI's directory can help organise that step; it cannot diagnose the animal, rank clinical competence or guarantee a particular outcome.
Questions to take with you
Questions worth asking
- Is this fact about the actual branch I would visit?
- Which important answer have I obtained directly from both providers?
Your working note
- Branch A/B __; source/date __; known service __.
- Intake response __; communication __; unanswered need __; next contact __.
This is practical preparation, not veterinary, legal or travel clearance. Confirm individual care with the appropriate professional and current terms with the actual provider.
Sources and how to use this guide
These sources support the principles in this guide. It has not had a veterinarian’s clinical review, and it is not a facility inspection or a service-quality certification.
