Finding emergency care: what to confirm before you travel
If you are worried about an emergency, contact a veterinary provider now; do not finish a directory comparison first.

PAVI can help you find contact information. It cannot confirm live capacity, assess urgency or guarantee that the nearest-looking result is the right destination.
Before you begin
- Call the usual vet or an appropriate emergency veterinary provider promptly.
- Do not wait for a correction form or online enquiry response.
01Make the first contact promptly
Describe the animal and the immediate concern to the veterinary provider. Follow their directions rather than waiting to collect every record or compare reviews.
If another adult is available, they can help locate records or transport while contact is being made; the checklist is not a prerequisite for care.
02Identify the actual receiving branch
Read whether the number belongs to one branch or a whole network. If it is a network contact, ask which location should receive the animal.
A familiar hospital name is not enough to determine the destination. Repeat the branch name and address back to avoid a mistaken journey.
03Ask about receiving the animal now
Ask directly: can this branch receive this animal for this concern now? Published hours and an emergency label do not answer that live question.
Tell the person any important change while speaking and follow veterinary guidance. Do not interpret a receptionist's price discussion as a clinical assessment.
04Confirm the destination and handover
Confirm the entrance or arrival instructions and who to contact when you reach the branch. Use the actual address supplied, not an unconfirmed network location.
Ask the provider about transport concerns for this animal. This page does not teach restraint, first aid, medication or a safe period to wait.
05Use another contact when needed
If you cannot connect, contact an appropriate alternative emergency veterinary provider. If directed elsewhere, confirm the receiving location rather than assuming a referral means automatic acceptance.
FDA emergency guidance distinguishes veterinary care from information or regulatory channels. Likewise, PAVI's directory and correction service are not an emergency response team.
Questions to take with you
Questions worth asking
- Can this branch receive this animal now?
- Which exact address and arrival contact should we use?
Your working note
- If practical, note: receiving branch __; phone __; address __.
- Do not delay contacting a vet to fill these blanks.
This is practical preparation, not veterinary, legal or travel clearance. Confirm individual care with the appropriate professional and current terms with the actual provider.
